What is Hypnosis
Hypnosis is regarded as a unique and successful method of accomplishing personal goals and change. Unless you have been hypnotised before, please remove from your mind everything that you have seen or heard about hypnosis. Put to one side your assumptions of what you think it feels like to be hypnotised. Often if someone has seen stage hypnosis, it may seem confusing because stage hypnosis is totally different from clinical hypnosis. Stage hypnosis works well on very few people and the suggestions are strictly for entertainment. Personal hypnosis works with almost everyone. People unfamiliar with hypnosis often ask the question, "Can I be hypnotised?" There are five groups of "non-hypnotisable" people - they include people whom: 1. are under the age of six (difficult, but not impossible) 2. have an IQ of 70 or less 3. are diagnosed as psychotic 4. do not want to be hypnotised 5. do not feel safe or comfortable or are irritated with the person hypnotising them To expand on the last points, you are always in control during the session and we invest much in creating a comfortable setting and rapport with our clients. It is our first interest to serve you and to meet your specific needs. WHAT IS HYPNOSIS? In the 1800's, James Braid named hypnosis after the Greek word "Hypnos", meaning sleep. Hypnosis is not sleep. It may appear as sleep when observed, and to some people in deep hypnosis it may even feel a little like sleep, but the person being hypnotised does not fall asleep. At all times during hypnosis you are conscious, only in an altered state of consciousness that allows you to make changes. Because you might not recall what was said, you might think that you were sleeping or unconscious, but when the hypnosis is concluding, you will immediately return normal awareness. People have tried to change the name over the years but the word "hypnosis" caught on and even today people still equate hypnosis with sleep. Hypnosis is a state of mind that heightens suggestibility. Hypnosis gives you the ability to accept suggestions on an unconscious level, where most conflicts seem to begin. It is an experience that is different for each person. For some it feels similar to when you are drifting off to sleep, not fully asleep and not fully awake. For others they feel like they are asleep (you are not at any time). Some people feel more aware of everything – their senses heightened, and lots of other experiences that are specific to the individual and the session. We will teach you what you may experience and give you opportunities to discover trance for yourself so we can work with how you experience it as an individual. In trance you can hear the words that the Hypnotist is speaking during the session, however sometimes you don't. Sometimes it feels like you are not paying attention and this is exactly how you reach your goal. By just letting the suggestions sink in, not intellectualising or analysing, the suggestions you are still hearing are accepted by the unconscious mind. A great metaphor for hypnosis is, "What a shower is to the body, hypnosis is to the mind." Hypnosis cleans what is in our unconscious mind, helping you to clean your mind of past, unwanted behaviour so that you can accomplish your goal. Even if we are not physically dirty, a shower feels so good. Even if you do not have a lot to accomplish, hypnosis will allow you to feel as though you can do anything.
