Fears and Phobias

Why do some people find clowns funny while others find them terrifying? Why does the most level headed person seem to go to pieces at the thought of getting on a plane or the sight of a mouse? Fear, much like stress is a natural healthy feeling. If we had no fear we wouldn't be able to react to dangerous situations, but for a person with a phobia the response is totally out of proportion to the perceived 'danger'. Phobic reactions are usually so fast and strong the sufferer has little or no chance of applying reason or logic. They know that a wasp cant really hurt them that much but the sight of one causes such a panic that logical thought is temporary pushed aside. Phobias develop when our mind associates a stimulus with danger, but makes the response far too strong. We all learn at an early age through conditioning or experience that fire is dangerous and can harm us. That doesn't stop us enjoying a nice log fire – unless we get too close to it and our instincts make us back away. A phobic person has learned to, from experience or conditioning that the thing that scares them is dangerous – but rather than a 'backing away' or uncomfortable feeling they receive a full on 'run for your life!!' message from their unconscious. Fortunately, just a phobias can develop or be learned very quickly, so they can be broken down or unlearned. A phobic thought is still just a thought and using hypnosis we can bring those thoughts and feelings that caused the phobia back into perspective and back under your control.
