You could be suffering from PTSD and not even realise it!
PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is most often associated with people coming back from war who have lived through incredibly awful experiences.
However, while this is often the case, many people can be suffering from PTSD without even realising it! Trauma is not just caused by living through a war, seeing people die, or sexual assault.
Grief is a common cause of PTSD too, but so can many, many experiences that leave a scar with us. It could be a difficult breakup, such as finding out that your partner has been unfaithful, being the victim of assault, a car accident, even an embarrassing incident that you just can't get over.
The point is, if you've been through a traumatic experience, not matter what it is, you may be suffering from PTSD.
The symptoms of PTSD can be hard for you to spot. Anxiety, insomnia, substance or alcohol abuse, excessive anger can all be signs of PTSD that you may not associate with that initial event. But, once the trauma is dealt with, the symptoms should go away!
Fortunately, PTSD is treatable, and great success has been achieved with a method called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprogramming). I have personally used this therapeutic technique to help people get past their previous traumas and move on with their lives. EMDR has been around for roughly 30 years (which in terms of therapeutic techniques, makes it fairly new!) and numerous studies have shown incredible results.
